I usually refrain from critiquing the quality of the physical book, but in this case it is pertinent.

This book is a photocopy of an old book that has long been out of print. Consequently, there are some pages that are rather hard to read. Also, there is an error around page 160 where two copies of pages 162 and 163 have been inserted, but pages 160 and 161 are missing. You can still figure out what happens, but it is a problem.

Finally, I found it disorienting that whoever photocopied the original for binding put the even pages on the right and the odd pages on the left. The entire time you are reading, you feel like you should be on the other side of the page.

These are minor issues, but I think they are worth noting, just so you know what you are getting when you purchase this book.

Re: content. This book is an account of the War of 1812, written in pseudo-scriptural style, using early 19th-century parlance. (You will find a lot of "Lo!" and "Verily" and "It came to pass.") The goal of the author was twofold: to pen a primer for all God-fearing, American schoolboys to learn their recent U.S. history; also to indoctrinate students as to the hand of Providence in America's victory over Britain. His opinion is that the valiant, righteous, God-fearing land of Columbia was led by God to defeat the ruthless, ignominious, oppressive tyranny of Britannia (who, by the way, beguiled the heathen "savages" of the native North American tribes and enlisted them to join the fight against the fair Americans). Be prepared for self-righteous religious speak and some plain, ol' fashioned racism, especially when describing Native Americans.

It is very illuminating, especially for anyone who has read the Book of Mormon. The book contains certain phrases that I have never encountered elsewhere but in the Book of Mormon (the description of a sword of "curious workmanship," for example). I have heard many believing LDS adherents say it would have been impossible for Joseph Smith to simply write the Book of Mormon himself, given his limited formal schooling. However, having read this book, one can see that it would be not only possible but relatively simple for a bright, gifted, self-taught, highly religious man in his mid-twenties to have written the Book of Mormon, drawing largely from this book and many other sources, not the least of which is the Bible itself, where many passages are lifted verbatim and inserted in the Book of Mormon. (See also "A View of the Hebrews" by Ethan Smith as another possible inspiration for the Book of Mormon.)

However, this book isn't any sort of "smoking gun." My personal belief is that those who are complete and utter defenders of the Mormon faith will not have their faith shaken in the least by reading this book. Those already suspicious of Joseph Smith's story will see this as one more point of evidence that the Book of Mormon is 19th-century fiction.

Wow! Shocking resemblance to the Book of Mormon.
Thank you for making this item available. It saved my marriage.
War Chapters
its stunning how close this resembles the book of mormon. who copied who?
Not a lot of historical information.
Realy bad scan work, they didn’t even worry about removing their hands from the scaner when scanning it. Many pages unreadable because the bad scanning quality, many pages missing because it was not well scanned, you can see that they were on the original book where they were scanned from because they show a piece of it on o
The other page in some cases.
Such a cool book. It is a photocopy, but it adds to the historical quality of the story.

Hoping this helps my DH with the truth...
